No beavers, but plenty of castor
India has no wild beavers. It does grow most of the world's castor beans, from a plant that probably owes its English name to the beaver.

Beaver facts
- India has no wild beavers. Asia's rarest, the Sino-Mongolian beaver (Castor fiber birulai), lives along the Bulgan River on the border between Xinjiang, China, and Mongolia.
- Only around 500 of them are thought to live in China, most within the Bulgan River Beaver Nature Reserve.
- "Castor oil" probably gets its name from castoreum: the plant's oil was used as a cheaper substitute for the beaver's scent in perfume.
- India grows about 85% of the world's castor seed, and Gujarat alone produces around 70% of India's crop.
